For the beauty of the earth, For the beauty of the skies,
For the love which from our birth Over and around us lies,
Lord of all, to thee we raise This our grateful hymn of praise.

Post-Election Ruminations

So, Romney lost. There is no surprise in our home...OK, slight surprise that he could lose to such a bad president, but no surprise that he lost in general. With Romney's nomination, the RNC continued its downward spiral into oblivion, or, at least, obtuseness. My whole life, and even before, the RNC has worked hard to make sure that it runs less than conservative candidates. I'm not really sure why, but I suspect it has something to do with cocktail party invitations. If you argue Reagan, please go back and read some history, the RNC hated him. They wanted Bush, "Sr." all along.

But this year (and one could argue, four years ago), with the running of a candidate that was not pro-life, but who believed it was perfectly OK to kill babies who were conceived under certain circumstances, the RNC is openly threatening their pro-life platform. Just as many Dems want any reference to God removed from their platform, so many in the RNC would like to see an end to a lot of the pro life "rhetoric" their party has stood for since the abomination that was Roe V Wade.

I made a lot of disturbing discoveries this year. One was that several Republican candidates did not even address abortion. The other was that pro-life voter guides listed Romney as pro-life across the board (just as they did with McCain) even though he is not. Is this what we will lower ourselves to just to get into office? Reagan proved that you don't have to water truth down to win. But, I really no longer believe that the RNC wants to win instead, as I inferred earlier, they just want to get a lot of party invitations. They want to be liked. They get tired of the media bagging on them all the time. Babies!!

The only way to win in four years, if we even get a chance to vote in four years, and at the rate we are giving up our liberties since 9/11 and then the election of Obama I have good reason to be concerned we might not, is to run a conservative. To do this, the RNC will have to be gutted. Unfortunately, getting new members into the RNC who hold the values of the majority of Americans will prove as difficult as it will be to roll back the so-called "temporary tax" the gullible voters of my state voted in yesterday. Once a bureaucracy, always a bureaucracy. This is the problem in Washington. People are entrenched, they are comfortable, they like the pay, they like the party invitations...they love the power.

I sometimes think that the only reason the Republican party still exists is that it's manned at the grassroots mostly by Christians. If it wasn't filled with people who have a hope beyond their government, they probably would have imploded before now. But, as it stands, many people I spoke with this year, people who do more than just vote or talk about it, are fairly disgusted. Judging by the conversations, it could be a good thing. These are the people who get involved. These are the people who spend a great deal of time praying and fasting. These are the people whom the RNC should be listening to. But they won't. They will listen to the media talking heads today as MSNBC and CNN analyse why Romney lost, and they will follow what those people say. While the people who would actually vote them into power work away at important causes and, in all likelihood, will not turn out in four years to vote for yet another milquetoast-y candidate.

  1. I'm a Christ follower, a mom and a democrat. I'm also African American. The Republican Party has to recognize that this country has changed and they have to become more inclusive and less dismissive. I have some conservative beliefs., but I will not align myself with a party that will not acknowledge people of color. It's sad, but things will not change for them until they realize that America is no longer homogenous. I pray for acceptance of all people in this country. The way Jesus accepted and listened to people. Maybe now we can have those conversations. Thanks for your wonderful blog.

    1. Thanks for reading and leaving a comment. I always appreciate it. I did want to clarify something you said here about the Republican party not acknowledging people of color. I live in SoCal and have many friends who are not "white" and who participate actively in the Republican party. How exactly does the party refuse to acknowledge certain people?

  2. I tried to comment on this yesterday ... but couldn't get through. Today I just say I'm putting my faith in God, not any party. This one's let me down too ... I think our country's problems are more spiritual than they are political anyway.

    1. I agree. It's hard to be a part of the political process in this country when we view things that way. Honestly I didn't even vote for President this time. :/

  3. I think people of color feel tha their needs are ignored by the Republican Party. The comments made by Mr. Romney at the fundraiser ( not caring about 47% of the population ) were just a hint of what people are feeling.
